Psalm 124From Pharoah to various captivities to Christian, secular, and Moslem persecutors, Israel and the Jewish people have suffered persecution. Much of this persecution came about as fulfillments of the prophecies in Dueteronomy where Israel entered into a covenant of curse and blessing. Some of the persecution Israel endured was not self-caused, however. Yet, whatever the reason of the persecution, Israel has survived because the Lord was always on their side. The same can be said about the experiences of the Bible-believing child of God. Thus the psalmist declares, "if it had not been for the Lord, we would've been swallowed up."
Sometimes the believer sees events in his life and can only say, "What would have happened to me if I hadn't trusted in God!" A well-wrought snares does not look like a trap, and the world is full of snares - ways that seem "right" to the carnal mind. But the believer often escapes these snares because they trust in God's ways and not in the help of humans.
1If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say;2If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us:3Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:4Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:5Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.6Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.7Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.8Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
