It's been nearly a year since Boston was rocked by a double bombing that took place near the finish line of the 117th Boston Marathon. Now, according to an article published by ABC News on April 9, officers who were on the scene of a shootout with the suspects just days after the bombings are now describing the events that took place that night.
ABC News reports that a number of law enforcement officers who were involved in the April 19 shootout with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev testified Wednesday before the House Homeland Security Committee revealing details never before told. The events of that night reportedly kicked off after the FBI released their photos of the Tsarnaev brothers to the public; naming them as suspects in the April 15 bombings.
Watertown Chief of Police Edward Deveau said they received a reports of a carjacking, and when officer Joseph Reynolds, who was the first to respond to the call, responded he had no idea what he was up against. If fact, Deveau said that of none of the 65 officers employed by the Watertown police department knew the carjacking call was linked to the Boston bombings.
Watertown Sgt. Jeffrey Pugliese says he knew there was trouble when he heard shots were fired while other officers were in pursuit of the stolen car. Pugliese says when he arrived on the scene he heard gun fire, and moments after he exited his vehicle he heard an explosion. He concluded by saying he advanced to where the other officers were exchanging gunfire with the suspects, and added that the suspects were “eventually taken into custody.”
The New York Post reported that there were a total of eight men involved in the 12-minute shootout where more than 250 shots were fired. In addition, at least three explosives were triggered reportedly destroying three Watertown police cars.
Reports indicate that Tamerlan Tsarnaev was shot and captured by police before being ran over by his brother as he made his escape. The medical examiner later revealed that Tamerlan Tsarnaev died from “blunt trauma to the head and torso as well as multiple gunshot wounds.”
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was later captured after being found him hiding in a dry-docked boat in a Watertown residents backyard. He faces 30 chargers, and if he is convicted could face the death penalty.
