MONTGOMERY, Alabama --- The Alabama River in Montgomery is above flood stage and is expected to crest this evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Martha Earnhardt, spokeswoman for Montgomery's Public Safety Department, said there are no concerns about downtown flooding.

The stage and seating area in the amphitheater at Riverfront Park are under water this afternoon.

The park is closed, with the gate at the end of the tunnel that leads to the park padlocked.

Mark Rose, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said flood stage is 35 feet, and the river was at 38.6 feet as of late morning. He said it was expected to crest at 40.4 feet this evening.

Earnhardt said that as of 4 p.m. the river was at just over 39 feet.

"It was predicted to rise to 40 today; it didn't reach that," Earnhardt said.

She said the river should begin to recede over the next 12 hours and by this time Thursday should be at about 38 feet.

Earnhardt said Catoma Creek in south Montgomery was already receding. She said she knew of one residence that was flooded by the creek's waters today.

Rose said residential flooding from the river is generally not a problem unless the river reaches about 45 feet.

The high waters were caused by heavy rains north of the Montgomery area earlier this week.
