More than 100 years ago, the American Cancer Society was started by volunteers relentless in their desire to change the course of cancer s history.

Today, the American Cancer Society thanks its more than 3 million volunteers including the many volunteers here in our community each of whom is creating their own legacy of compassion and dedication toward the collective goal of finishing the fight against cancer. I am proud to say I am a longtime volunteer for the organization.

Next week is National Volunteer Week (April 6-12), so I invite you to stand with me to continue that important legacy. Our local cancer patients need us.

One way we are needed is through vital transportation. One of the toughest challenges people face is getting to and from much-needed cancer treatments. They may be too sick to drive themselves, may not have a car or someone to drive them, or may not be able to afford gas or other transportation costs. The American Cancer Society Road To Recovery program provides patients with free rides to treatment centers, and that s where you can help.

Your American Cancer Society is looking for people just like me who can use their own vehicles to drive patients who are undergoing cancer treatment to and from their appointments. Interested volunteers can call 1-800-227-2345 to find out more about this important program and how to get involved. By giving a little of your time, you can help save lives while fulfilling your own. I know I do!
