Stephen Fife dug himself a big hole right from the get-go. His teammates could not bail him out as the Albuquerque Isotopes suffered a 9-2 loss to the host Reno Aces on Wednesday night.
Fife (0-2) gave up six runs in the first inning alone. The veteran right-hander ended up allowing seven runs on nine hits and one walk in 3.1 innings, ballooning his ERA to 14.73 in two starts this season.
The Isotopes (4-2) saw their four-game winning streak come to a crashing halt. Offensively, they did pound out nine hits, but the only scoring came on a two-run homer by Miguel Olivo in the fourth inning.
Otherwise Albuquerque left 11 men on base while going 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position. That was not exactly the recipe to save the pitching staff.
Didi Gregorius went 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI to pace the Aces (3-4). Mike Jacobs was also 3-for-5, while four other players had two hits apiece.
Mike Bolsinger (2-0) earned the win, allowing just the two-run homer in six innings of work. Eury de la Rosa and Derek Eitel followed with three scoreless innings of relief.
Clint Robinson went 3-for-5 with a run scored for the Isotopes. Top prospect Joc Pederson was just 1-for-3 with two walks.
Albuquerque will wrap up the series with Reno on Thursday at 7:35 p.m. The Isotopes' home opener is Friday at 7:05 p.m. against Tacoma.
