michael kors jet set tote Alabama running back T.J. Yeldon runs against Auburn during an SEC game on Nov. 30, 2013, at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala. (Vasha Hunt/vhunt@al.com)Readers of Advance Digital's SEC blogs like Alabama's running backs to be the best in the SEC this season. The big question is, which one. The Crimson Tide's T.J. Yeldon, the SEC's leading returning rusher who gained 1,235 yards and scored 14 touchdowns in his sophomore season, received 1,378 of the the 4,241 votes in , which opened Monday and closed Friday morning. That's 32.5 percent of the total votes. That didn't surprise, considering he is the leading returning rusher in the SEC and many of our readers are from Alabama, where AL.com is a primary news source. What did surprise some was the write-in campaign of Derrick Henry, the big (6-foot-3, 238 pounds) and talented reserve who had a strong Sugar Bowl in the Tide's loss to Oklahoma. Despite never having a game in which he had double digit carries, Henry drew 774 write-in votes, enough to make him the second-most popular vote-getter in the poll, despite not being one of the 11 running backs named on the ballot. Said commenter Jim Taver, "I hope you all voted 'other' and put in Derrick Henry. He's going to run over and through people this year." Others thought the Henry love was premature. A commenter that goes by the name "Auburn" asked: "Wasn't Yeldon No. 1 on this list last year? 'Bama fans are already screaming for Henry to play. I think after all these years in the Saban system people should know that any RB looks good at Alabama." Overall, write-in votes accounted for 1,071 (25.3 percent) of the total. Third among vote getters was Georgia's Todd Gurley (693 votes), followed by two incoming freshmen, Auburn's Racean Thomas (512 votes) and LSU's Leonard Fournette (412 votes). Gurley, considered by many to be the top running back on the 2015 NFL draft board, got the most love of any back not wearing Crimson. Commenter "Alabama Football 15" wrote: "If Gurley can avoid injury he should be the guy. He needs to lose a little weight and lose his attitude as well." He went on to opine that LSU, with Fournette, and Alabama should be in good shape at the position. "Fournette will be used from day 1 by Les (Miles) so he will be a load," he wrote. "Henry just might take the first spot but that could be great for T.J. much like the rotation of Eddie and then T.J.. Let Henry pound them and TJ and then run by them when they get tired." The running back poll was the second position poll in Advance's ongoing series. Last week, to be the best quarterback in the SEC in 2014. On Monday, we'll start a poll on SEC wide receivers.
