A three-car crash trapped one person in a vehicle Friday, and firefighters worked near a downed power line to get the person out safely.

In a second incident nearly an hour later, firefighters responded to a two-vehicle crash that had three people trapped in vehicles, said Capt. Christopher Jurvig of the Tucson Fire Department. All three were removed and taken to a hospital in critical condition, Jurvig said.

In the first incident, firefighters responded shortly after 5 p.m. to the 1200 block of North Columbus Boulevard, near East Speedway, to the three-car crash, Jurvig said.

Firefighters removed one person who was trapped inside a vehicle, which was near the downed power line. Crews also worked on a second person and both were taken to a hospital. One person was in critical condition and the other in stable condition, said Jurvig.

In the second incident, firefighers responded shortly before 6 p.m. to the 400 block of South Country Club Road, south of Broadway and freed two people trapped in one vehicle, and another trapped in a second vehicle, said Jurvig.

Twenty-two firefighters worked to remove the three critically injured people from the vehicles. Paramedics treated them and transported them to the hospital, Jurvig said.

No information was immediately available about how the crashes occurred.
